조선왕조실록에 나타난 ‘문화(文化)’ 개념에 대한 고찰

A Study on the ‘Munwha’ Concept in the Annals of the Joseon Dynasty (the Joseon Wangjo Sillok)

오늘날 우리는 일상생활에서 문화경관, 문화콘텐츠, 문화재, 문화유산, 현대문화, 전통문화 등 ‘문화(文化)’라는 단어를 매우 빈번하게 사용한다. 그런데 조선시대에 우리 조상들은 ‘文化’라는 단어를 어떤 의미로 사용하였을까? 만약 오늘날과 같은 의미로 ‘文化’라는 단어를 사용하였다면, 오늘날과 같이 빈번하게 사용하였을까? 이 논문에서는 이러한 물음에 대한 해답을 찾기 위해 『조선왕조실록(朝鮮王朝實錄)』에 등장하는 ‘文化’ 단어를 조사하고 분석한다. 이 논문에서 참조하는 『조선왕조실록』은 웹사이트에 게시되어 있는 국사편찬위원회 한국사데이터베이스 『조선왕조실록』이다. 이 『조선왕조실록』은 고종실록·순종실록·순종실록부록을 포함하는 넓은 의미의 『조선왕조실록』이다. 이 『조선왕조실록』에는 ‘文化’ 단어가 총 261번이나 등장하는데, 이 중에 황해도 지명 ‘文化’가 243번이나 등장하고, 문물과 제도로서의 ‘文化’가 14번 등장하며, 일본의 연호 ‘文化’가 4번 등장한다. 『조선왕조실록』에서 압도적으로 높은 출현 빈도를 나타내는 지명 ‘文化’는 황해도 문화현을 가리키는 단어였다. 문물과 제도로서의 ‘文化’는 『조선왕조실록』에 단지 14번 등장함으로써 그리 빈번하게 사용하는 단어가 아니었음을 알 수 있다. 『조선왕조실록』에 등장하는 문물과 제도로서의 ‘文化’는 ‘어떤 인간 집단이 공유하는 생활양식의 총집합체’로서 0번, ‘공연·전시·음악·예술·문학 활동 등’으로서 2번, ‘발전된 것이나 개화된 것’으로서 12번 등장한다. 그런데 ‘공연·전시·음악·예술·문학 활동’으로서의 ‘文化’는 1921년(순종실록부록 14년)에 처음으로 등장한다. 조선시대에 문물과 제도로서의 ‘文化’는 문명(文明)과 동의어 혹은 유사어로서 ‘발전된 것이나 개화된 것’의 의미로 사용되었다.

The word ‘munwha’ as culture is today spoken very frequently in our daily lives. This paper aims to find the meanings of the word ‘munwha’ in Joseon Dynasty period through the analysis of ‘munwha’ words found in the Annals of the Joseon Dynasty (Joseon Wangjo Sillok). In the Annals, the word ‘munwha’ appears 261 times: the word ‘munwha’ as place name in Whanghaedo, 243 times; the word ‘munwha’ as culture, 14 times; and the word ‘munwha’ as the Japanese era designation, 5 times. In the Annals, the word ‘munwha’ as place name is far more frequent, while the word ‘muwha’ as culture is not so frequent. Among the 14 ‘munwha’ words as culture, culture as ‘the total way of life held in common by a group of people’ does not show up, culture as performance/ exhibition/ show/ music/ art/ literature appears twice, and culture as civilization turns up 12 times. By the way, the word of ‘munwha’ as performance/ exhibition/ show/ music/ art/ literature appears for the first time in 1921 (Sunjong Supplement Annals 14). In Joseon Dynasty period the word ‘munhwa’ as culture was a synonym of civilization, i.e. human society marked by an advanced stage of development.
