목적 본 연구는 학습자들이 실험에서 무엇을 경험하고 추론하는지 탐색하기 위한 목적에서 실험 도구의 사용과 변경에 대해 이론과의 상호 연관을 중심으로 살펴보고자 하였다. 실험에서 사용하는 도구들은 각각의 목적과 배경이 되는 사항을 품고 있다는 점을 고려하여, 결과 해석을 위한 핵심적인 이론과 어떻게 연관되어 변화하는지 분석하고자 하였다. 방법 이를 위해, 비교적 자유롭게 자신들의 실험을 조직할 수 있도록 구성한 일종의 자유 탐구 수업에서 연구를 추진하였다. 초점이 된 실험은 염화 수소와 암모니아의 확산 실험으로, 7개 조의 대학생들이 총 9주간에 걸쳐 실험을 수행하였다. 이들이 9주 동안 실험을 실시하며 작성한 실험 계획서와 중간에 2차례 실시한 발표에서 제출한 2종의 발표 자료, 최종 보고서를 분석하였다. 수집한 자료들을 실험을 수행 차례에 따라 구분, 연관시켰고, 이들이 사용한 도구가 어떠한 이론을 매개로 실험의 목적과 어떻게 연관되는지 분석하였다. 결과 연구 결과, 실험 도구의 사용과 변경은 도구나 재료의 교체, 제작 및 변형 활용, 변인과 연관된 도구나 재료의 추가 및 조정으로 구분할 수 있었다. 이와 함께 도구의 사용과 변경은 과학적 사실 확인과 정확성의 확보, 결과 해석의 주요 이론 변경에 따른 적절성 탐색과 연관시킬 수 있었고, 실험이 진행될수록 고려하는 도구와 이론들 간의 관계가 복잡해짐을 확인할 수 있었다. 결론 결과를 토대로, 실험을 활용한 탐구 활동을 계획할 때, 고려해야 하는 사항들에 대해 논의하였다.

Objectives This study attempts to explore the use and change of experimental tools, focusing on the relation with theories, to reveal what learners experience and infer in experiment. Considering that the tools which used in the experiment related their own purpose and background, this study analyzed how tools relate to the core theory for interpreting the experimental results and how the use of tools change during the experiments. Methods For this purpose, this study focused on authentic inquiry so that participants could organize their own experiments and processes freely. The focused experiment was a ‘diffusion of hydrogen chloride and ammonia’, and participants was the 7 groups of undergraduate students who performed experiments over 9 weeks. To analyze, their experimental plans while performing experiments for 9 weeks, two kinds of presentations prepared for reporting two times, and final reports were analyzed as the data. The collected data were classified and correlated according to the order of the experiments, and analyzed how the use of tools were related to the experimental purpose through which theory mediated. Results As a results, it was found that the use and change of tools could be distinguished into replacement of tools or materials, fabrication or transformation, addition or adjustment associated with variables. Also, The use and change of tools were related to confirming the scientific fact and accuracy of results, and exploring the relevance of the change of main theory for the interpretation of results. The relation between tools and theories became more complex, as the experiments progressed. Conclusions Based on the results, several implications are discussed to be considered when planning the inquiry program with experiments.
