Mirror and Camera: Angle of “You” in Speeches on Hansen s Disease

한국 한센인의 기억과 서사를 ‘격리-낙인-추방’으로 읽어볼 수 있는데 여기에는 혐오의 감정이 관통하고 있다. 한센인을 재현하는 주체들은 여럿이었다. 한센병/한센인에 대한 혐오 발화는 한센인과 그의 가족, 마을 공동체, 의료 관계자, 그리고 일반 대중의 시선들이 수렴/분산되는 지점에서 구축된 것이다. 또한 그것은 사회 일반의 낙인과 한센인의 자기혐오가 중첩된 구조물이기도 하다. 한센인들은 도시의 위생 청결과 일반인의 건강을 보호하기 위해서 통제와 관리가 필요한 사람들로 분류된 한편 민족, 동포애를 자극하는 대상으로 호명되기도 했다. 한센병 혹은 한센인에 관한 발화에서 “당신/우리”라는 주어는 고정된 의미와 위치를 지니고 있지 않았다. ‘거울’과 ‘카메라’는 한센인의 질병 체험과도 관련이 있는 사물들인데 이 글에서는 혐오 발화의 방식과 효과를 포착하는 방법론적 장치로 사용한다. 거울과 카메라가 지닌 속성을 때로는 은유적으로 활용해 한센병/한센인 혐오 발화를 둘러싼 다층적 교차점들을 읽고자 한다. 아울러 피부, 얼굴, 사진 등 한센인의 신체, 질병, 사물들에서 파생된 용어들을 매개로 한센병과 마주하는 혐오 발화의 시선들을 그려볼 것이다.

Since modern times in Korea, Hansen’s Disease (Patients)[HDP] have frequently appeared in newspapers, magazines, literary arts such as literature, theatre, and movies under various names, including leprosy, vagrant patients, and so forth. The sensibility of the stigma toward HDP was formed and spread by adding paralysis, crippled and deformed body images, the imagination of the fear of contagion, the groundless rumors. The memories and narratives of the Korean HDP can read as “Isolation—Stigma— Expel,” which is filled with hateful feelings. There were several subjects who represented HDP. The hate speech against HDP is built at the point of convergence/distribution of HDP and his family, village communities, medical institutions and officials, and the general public s views. It is also a structure that overlaps the social stigma with HDP s self-hatred. In advance, they were classified as people who needed control and management to protect the city’s cleanliness and the health of the general public and were also called targets that stimulated neighbor, national, and ethnic love. The subject “You/We” in the HDP’s speech did not have a fixed meaning and position. “Mirror” and “Camera” are things that are also related to HDP s illness experience or narrative. In this article, they are used as methodological devices to capture the ways and effects of hate speech on HDP. I want to use the functions and properties of mirror and camera metaphorically to read the multilayered intersections surrounding HDP s hate speeches. Also, this paper will also draw hate speech’s various perspectives through symptoms and terms derived from HDP s body, disease, skin, face, and photography.
