『震閥彙攷續編』 硏究

A Study on Jinbeolhwigo Sequel: With a focus on its organizational style and also their characteristics

일본 도쿄대학(東京大學) 아가와 문고(阿川文庫)에 소장된 『震閥彙攷續編』은 이미 알려진 『震彙續考』의 온전한 형태를 보여주고 있다. 19세기 후반에 저술되었다고 추정되는 編著者 미상의 이 책은 7冊 50篇目 1,010條目에 많은 인물들을 수록한 人物志이다. 『진벌휘고속편』에 수록된 인물들은 兩班階層뿐만 아니라 中下層의 인물들까지 두루 포함되어 있다. 이는 근대서민의식이 이 시기 대두되고 있었음을 방증해주는 것이라 하겠다. 孝子와 忠臣, 烈女와 같은 양반들의 모범적인 인물들도 등장하지만 이에 못지않게 盜賊이나 奸巧, 심지어는 娼妓와 婢使에 이르는 하층민들까지 기록하고 있다. 본고에서는 다양한 인물들의 기록이 보존된 『진벌휘고속편』의 체제와 구성방식에 대해 살펴보고 그 특징들을 밝혀 보았다. 그 결과 다음과 같은 연구 성과를 도출할 수 있었다. 첫째, 『진벌휘고속편』의 편목 구성은 인물 능력의 다각화를 통해 각 인물의 개성을 발굴해내는 특징이 있음을 밝혔다. ‘도류’조목을 통해 살펴본 정렴과 남사고가 그 좋은 예이다. 정렴은 ‘통재’, ‘도류’, ‘음양가’적 소양을 두루 지닌 인물로 제시된다. 이는 정렴의 능력을 다양한 각도에서 살핀 결과 정렴의 개성을 확장시키고 있는 것이라고 하겠다. 남사고의 경우도 마찬가지이다. 둘째, 『진벌휘고속편』은 여성 인물 및 다양한 인물들을 제시함으로써 인간 본연의 가치를 고양했다는 특징을 지닌다는 것을 밝혔다. 셋째, 『진벌휘고속편』은 조선후기 서민의식의 성장을 보여주는 좋은 자료적 가치를 지녔다는 것을 밝혔다. 또한 각 인물 군들의 개성을 존중하는 태도를 통해 인물들에 대한 편견과 오해의 틀을 문학이라는 장르를 통해 타파하려 했다는 데서 문학적 가치를 가진 문헌임을 밝혔다. 넷째, 『진벌휘고속편』은 역사적, 문학적 가치가 있음에도 불구하고 인용 문헌의 사실적 기술이 미흡한 점, 여성 인물의 현실 개혁 의지가 약하게 드러났다는 점 등의 한계도 존재한다.

Jinbeolhwigo Sequel housed at the Agawa Library of Tokyo University in Japan shows the intact form of Jinbeolhwigo that is already known. Estimated in the latter part of the 19th century, this book with no known compiler offers records of numerous figures in seven volumes, 500 catalogues, and 1,010 articles. The figures recorded in the book are broad and diverse including those in the lower-middle classes as well as nobility, which provides circumstantial evidence that the modern commoners consciousness emerged during this period. In the book, there are records even about the rabbles including thieves, cunning men, prostitutes, and private affairs as well as model noblemen including dutiful children, loyal subjects, and virtuous women. This study set out to examine the system and organizational style of Jinbeolhwigo Sequel whose records about various figures had been preserved and shed light on their characteristics. The findings led to the following research achievements: First, the catalogue organization of Jinbeolhwigo Sequel is characterized by the identification of each individual s personality through the diversification of their abilities. Jeongryeom and Namsago examined under the Doryue article are good examples. Jeongryeom is depicted as a figure with broad refinement across Tongjae, Doryu, and Eumyangga, which was to expand his expand his personality by examining his abilities at diverse angles. It is the same case with Namsago. Secondly, Jinbeolhwigo Sequel enhances the innate values of human being by presenting women and various figures. Thirdly, Jinbeolhwigo Sequel holds eminent value as materials exhibiting the growth of commoners consciousness in the latter part of Joseon. By employing an attitude of respecting the personality of each figure group, the book tries to break down a framework of prejudice and misunderstanding for figures through the genre of literature and thus hold literary values, as well. Finally, Jinbeolhwigo Sequel has its share of limitations including the poor realistic descriptions of literature quoted in it and women s weak determination for the reform of reality despite its historical and literary values.
