The Possibility of Open Motherhood in Le Clézio’s Histoire du pied Foreign Literature Studies

모성애는 인간이 경험할 수 있는 가장 이타적인 사랑의 하나로 어느 문화권 문학에서나 많은 관심을 가져온 주제이다. 현대 프랑스 문학도 예외는 아니라서 시몬드 보부아르, 로맹 가리, 마르그리트 뒤라스, 아니 에르노 등 여러 작가들이 자전적 경험과 상상에 기댄 다양한 어머니상을 작품 속에 그렸다. 모성이라는 테마를 반복해 다루는 작가로서 르 클레지오 역시 이 계보에 넣을 수 있을 것이다. 다수의 작품에서 그는 여성 인물의 어머니 됨을 서사의 중요한 전환점으로 제시하고, 이 경험에 풍부한 상징성을 부여해왔다. 르 클레지오의 단편집 『발 이야기 그리고 다른 상상들』(2011)의 표제작 「발 이야기」는 유진이라는 젊은 여성이 예기치 못한 임신을 하면서 겪게 되는 다면적 변화를 보여준다. 진정한 사랑을 주던 존재로서 어머니가 세상을 떠난 뒤, 깊은 고독을 안게 된 주인공은 여성에게 특히 억압적인 도시에서 살아가며 스스로를 존중하고 사랑하기보다는 남성적 욕망에 부응하려 애쓰는 것을 생존의 방식으로 체득한다. 이기적이고 무책임한 남자와의 연애에 매달리며 유진의 태도는 헌신을 넘어 거의 자기 파괴에 가까워지는데, 뜻밖의 임신으로 제 몸에 들이닥친 타자를 받아들이는 과정에서 그는 자기애를 회복하고 주체적 여성성을 획득하며 타인과 연대하는 삶을 배워나간다. ‘엄마 잃은 딸’에서 ‘딸을 가진 엄마’로 이행하는 유진이 경험하는 사랑은 흔히 ‘인간의 한계를 초월한 자기희생’이나 ‘배타적 자식 사랑’으로 그려지던 전통적 모성과 다른 ‘열린 모성’의 가능성을 생각하게 한다.

Histoire du pied (2011), a short novel by J. M. G. Le Clézio, presents a young woman, Ujine, who has gone through waves of changes that come with her unexpected pregnancy. Left alone when her loving mother passed away, she learns how to survive in an oppressive urban life, particularly against women, by fulfilling the desires of men, the ruling class of modern society, rather than by living according to her own wishes. This survival strategy paradoxically leads her to fall in love with a selfish and irresponsible man. She helplessly obeys his rules of the game and pushes herself nearly to the point of self-destruction. After an unplanned pregnancy, a process of accepting the invasion of the “half-other” in her body, she regains her self-esteem, acquires autonomous femininity, and finds solidarity with others. Distinct from traditional motherhood, often described as sacrifice beyond human limits or exclusive love for her children, the maternal love Le Clézio describes is thus characterized by its openness and expansiveness.
