Since 2003, the National Institute of Environmental Research (NIER) of Korea has been conducting The monitoring study on exposure level and biomarkers of environmental pollutants in Ulsan industrial complex with the goal to establish the surveillance system for resident, to evaluate the health effects associated with chronic exposure to environmental pollutants and to present the environmental health indicators in Ulsan industrial complex. This survey is consisted of 3 step such as foundation construction, operation and extension, and evaluation and accountability of surveillance system to improve quality of life and to maintain right of healthiness for Ulsan residents. As the first step, from 2003 to 2008, the study has been performing to construct the surveillance system related to the full-length survey. In this year, we are going to analyze metals (Pb in blood and Cd, inorganic As and Hg in urine) for 1,972 samples and VOCs (11 species) and PAHs (18 species) for 300 samples (blood sample). Moreover, the summary of first step and the preparing of further second step are currently underway. In this article, we report the introduction and protocols of this study and the distribution of size of the study participants.
