Limited studies have compared the effects of instrument assisted soft tissue mobilization (IASTM) and proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF) on the ankle joint. Thus, the present study aimed to compare the effects of IASTM and PNF on the muscle strength, range of motion (ROM) and the dynamic stability of the ankle. A total of forty healthy male adults participated in this study. The study participants were randomly categorized into the IASTM group (n=20) and the PNF group (n=20). Changes in the muscle strength, ROM, and the dynamic stability of the ankle were detected just after applying IASTM or PNF for only once as an acute application. The data were analyzed using repeated measures analysis of variance. As a result, there were significant interaction effects between group and time on the ankle plantarflexion ROM (P= 0.005); compared to PNF, IASTM increased the ROM greater. However, there was no statistically significant interaction effect between group and time on the ankle dorsiflexion ROM, muscle strength during ankle plantarflexion and dorsiflexion, and the dynamic stability of the ankle (P>0.05). In conclusion, to improve the ankle ROM, IASTM may be a more effective method compared to PNF.
