日中韓の猫の名称と別称は、次のような方法により誕生していた。第一は泣き声により韓国は「ニャｵﾝイ」、中国は「ミャオ」から「マオ」に、日本は 「ネウ」と「コ」を付けたものを略して「ネコ」となった。第2は、他の動物の名前で呼ぶという点である。韓国人は猫蝶思想によって「蝶」、中国人は蝶またはセミを捕まえて食べるという意味で銜蟬、啣蝶、日本は虎のような動物という意味で「トラ」と言った。第三は形態が獅子、虎、山猫に似ていることから、小狻猊、家虎、家狸、狸奴などの別称が生まれ、その中、家狸は韓日両国が共通して使用した。第四に習性と性格によるもので、韓国は鼠を捕るのが上手で奇怪な動物という意味で 「高伊」または 「怪樣狸」とも呼ばれ、中国は蒙貴、田鼠將とも呼ばれた。それに対し日本は「鼠子待」、 「鼠好む」、「睡獸」、「寝好む」、「寝小魔」などで見られるように鼠を捕らえ、よく眠れる動物というイメージが強い。第五は日本にのみ適用されるもので、「寝高麗」のように故郷(高麗)を表す言葉から派生したと見る認識もあった。このように日中韓の猫の名称と別称は、以上の5つの方法に基づいて誕生していた。

In Japan, however, there is an interpretation that “Neko” has emerged from a cat’s sleeping habit. Finally, there is a story that it stemmed from the name of a remaining Koryo people in Japan.
