Comparative Study of Punctuation Marks in Korean and Japanese: Focusing on the Korean Comma and Period ‘, .’ and their Japanese Analogues ‘、。’

韓国語の쉼표、마침표 「, .」 の規定と日本語の読点、句点 「、。」 の規 定を比較し、次のような点が明らかになった。 韓国語の쉼표は、接続副詞の後ろに打たないことが勧められているが、 日本語の読点は接続詞の後ろに打つことが規定されている。語句が並べられる列挙の場合、쉼표は打たないことが勧められているが、読点は打つことが規定されている。引用文の場合、日本語では引用文の前、引用文を受ける「といって、と思って」の後ろ、そして「と」の後ろに読点を打つことが規定されているが、韓国語では引用文に関する쉼표の規定がなく、打つこともない。修飾の語句(形容詞的語句)が続く場合、日本語では修飾を区別するため読点を打つが、韓国語の쉼표は打たない。また、主題として出された語句の次に読点を打つが쉼표は打たない。 韓国語の마침표は、クェスチョンマークとエクスクラメーションマーク の代わりに使うことができるが、日本語の規定にはクェスチョンマークとエクスクラメーションマークの規定がないため、そこに句点を打つ。日本語では句点の代わりに読点を打つことができるが、韓国語の場合、마침표の代わりに쉼표を使うことができない。引用文の場合、마침표は文の中には打たなくてもいいが、句点は一般的に打つことが規定されている。

The differences determined by comparing the Korean regulations of commas and periods ‘. ,’ and the Japanese regulations of 読点 and 句点 ‘、。’ are as follows: The Korean comma is advised not to be used after a conjunctive adverb whereas the Japanese 読点 is prescribed to be used after conjunction. In cases of enumerations where words or phrases are being listed, a comma is advised not to be used, but 読点 is prescribed to be used. For quotations, Japanese regulates using 読点 before a quotation, or after a word or a phrase that follows the quotation such as ‘といって, と思って’, or after ‘と’; however, Korean has no regulations on the comma related to quotations, and it is indeed not used in such environments. When modifying words and phrases(形容詞的語句) follow consecutively, the Japanese language uses 読点 to distinguish the modifiers, but the Korean language does not use a comma, and while 読点 is used after words or phrases that are presented as the topic, the comma is not used for this purpose. Contrary to the Korean period that can be used instead of a question mark and an exclamation mark, there are no regulations on the question mark and exclamation mark in Japanese, and thus 句点 is used here. In the Japanese language, 読点 can be used instead of 句点, but there are no cases of using a comma instead of a period in the Korean language. For quotations, while a period is not required to be used inside the double-quotation marks, 句点 is prescribed to be used in general.
