Charles A. Clark’s Study on Korean Buddhism

본 연구는 개신교 선교사 찰스 클라크(Charles Allen Clark, 곽안련)의 저서 『옛 한국의 종교』(Religions of Old Korea)의 한국 불교 서술을 분석하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 클라크의 저서는 선교사로서의 한국 경험과 서양의 학문 담론 사이의 만남의 산물이다. 그는 불교 연구를 위해 1919년에 한국 곳곳의 절을 방문하고 승려들을 만났으며, 근대 불교 교육을 주도한 승려 박한경과 집중적인 인터뷰를 가졌다. 현지인과의 만남은 그가 다른 서양 연구자의 견해를 반박하는 근거가 되었다. 그는 1920년 시카고대학에서 비교종교학을 수강함으로써 방법론을 보강하였고, 1921년에 강연을 통해 원고의 골자를 구성하였다. 그는 한국 현지의 경험을 미국 학계의 형식에 담아내어 한국종교와 불교에 관한 독보적인 저작을 저술하였다. 그는 이전의 선교사와는 달리 종교 실천의 관점에서 한국 불교의 변화를 관찰하였으며, 그 결과 1910년대 한국 현장의 모습을 반영한 연구를 남겼다.

The purpose of this study is to analyze the description of Korean Buddhism in Religions of Old Korea by Charles Allen Clark, a Protestant missionary. Clark’s work is the result of the encounter between the experience of the mission field and the theory of the academic world. He visited temples throughout Korea and met monks in 1919. He had intensive interviews with Hankyung Park, an elite monk. Encounters with the natives served as the basis for refuting the views of previous Western researchers on Korean Buddhism. He reinforced his methodology by taking courses of Comparative Religion at the University of Chicago in 1920, and composed the outline of the manuscript through addressing a lecture in 1921. He has written an unparalleled book on Korean religion and Buddhism by putting his experiences in Korea in the American academic format. Unlike his previous missionaries, he observed the reality of Korean Buddhism from the viewpoint of religious practice, and as a result, he left a study that preserved the vivid aspects of Korean Buddhism in the 1910s.
