A Study on the Reliability Determining of Outdoor Polymer Insulating Materials Using Salt Damage Attribution Analysis

In this thesis, the surface degradation phenomena and dielectric activity evaluations of EPDM and Silicone rubber which are widely used as an outdoor insulating materials, were investigated by using the salt fog test. The weight loss of polymer insulators remarkedly depends on the occurring number of peak pulse, not the magnitude of leakage current. Taking a view of the time-lag to electrical breakdown and weight loss as a function of the conductivity of salt water, the worst test conditions of EPEM and Silicone rubber are the conductivity of 1000 μS/cm and 2000 μS/cm, respectively. As a result it could be concluded that the worst test condition of surface degradation of polymer insulators depends on the polymer material constituents and has to be determined with the critical conductivity of each material.
