자카트 의무 이행과 활용을 통해 본 국내 소수 무슬림 공동체 속 자카트 의미

The Meaning of Zakat Based on its Collection and Management in the Minority Muslim Community in Korea

본 논문은 한국 사회에 존재하는 무슬림 공동체의 자카트 모금과 활용 방법을 조사하고, 이슬람 세계의 방식과 비교하였다. 이를 통해 소수 무슬림 공동체 속에서 자카트가 갖는 의미와 파생되는 의미를 파악하였다. 국내 거주 중인 무슬림은 소수 공동체로 종교 시설이 중심이 되어 자카트를 모금하고, 시설 유지에 사용하였다. 자카트의 원래 목적인 빈민구제는 한국 내 기관이 아닌, 출신국이나 이슬람 세계의 종교 단체를 활용해 시행하였다. 결과적으로 자카트 모금과 활용은 무슬림이 소수인 사회에서 자신들의 종교 정체성을 확인하고 표출하는 방법의 일환으로 활용되고 있다.

This article examines the way of collecting zakat and using it in the Muslim community of Korea by comparing it to the manner in which it’s done in the Islamic World. Hence, this study analyzes the meaning of zakat and its role in the Muslim community in Korea. The mosques and musallah are the centers to raise funds, and Muslims spend zakat funds to maintain their facilities. Furthermore, Muslims in Korea send zakat to their homeland and religious groups in the Islamic World to relieve the poor rather than using relevant institutes in Korea. As a result, zakat is a method to confirm Muslims’ religious identity and to express themselves in Korean society as a member of the minority community.
