Self-expression Desires and Makeup and Hair Styling Behavior of Male and Female Adolescents in Gwangju and Jeonnam Region

The purpose of this study was to obtain basic data on how adolescents self-expression desires appear as appearance-related behavior by understanding the differences between male and female adolescents basic needs of self-expression desires and makeup, hair behavior and makeup and hair behavior according to self-expression desires groups. Data was collected from 571 middle and high school students located in Gwangju and Jeonnam. For data analysis, SPSS/WIN 24.0, a statistical program, is used to perform frequency and percentage, reliability test (Cronbach α), factor analysis, K-means cluster analysis, t-test, ANOVA, and Duncan s post-test. The research results were as follows. First, the current consumption and interest in cosmetics and hair styling among adolescents suggests that education is needed. Second, male adolescents had higher desire for personality pursuit among sub-factors of self-expression desires, and female adolescents had higher desire for imitation of celebrity than other gender and showed more makeup and hair behavior than male adolescents. Third, while looking at the differences in makeup and hair styling behaviors among the groups according to the characteristics of adolescents self-expression desire, the male adolescents had higher scores in makeup and hair styling behavior than other groups. This means that groups that are socially sympathetic are actively conducting makeup and hair styling behavior. In the case of female adolescents, the individual pursuit of personality group had higher scores for makeup and hair styling behavior than other groups, which can be seen as expressing personality by actively doing makeup and hair styling behavior. As such, adolescents are interested in makeup and hair styling behavior and want to express themselves freely in school through makeup and hair styling behavior, and want to receive formal education. In order to respond to these demands, it is necessary to seek detailed education plans by grasping the characteristics and differences of adolescents.
