C. G. Jung s Understanding of Gnosticism

심리학자 칼 융은 심리학을 넘어서서 다양한 사상의 분야에까지 자신의 연구범위를 확대했는데, ‘영지주의’도 그 중의 하나이다. 융이 깊이 관련되어 있기 때문에, 나그 함마디 문서의 코덱스 1은 ‘융 코덱스’라 불린다. 나그 함마디 문서에 대한 연구는 중요하기에 지속적으로 연구해야 한다. 이런 상황에서, 심리학자 융의 영지주의 이해를 살펴보는 것은 나그 함마디 문서와 영지주의 연구를 더 풍성하게 만드는 효과가 있을 것이다. 필자는 소고를 통해, “융이 영지주의를 어떻게 이해했는가?”라는 질문에 답하고자 한다. 융의 저작들 속에 나타난 내용들을 살펴보았다. 융은 자신의 심리학적 개념들인 “원형, 투사, 상징”을 사용해서 영지주의를 설명한다. 융은 연금술 이해도 영지주의 이해와 동일하다. 융에게서 연금술과 영지주의는 인간 내면의 투사이다. 영지주의의 긴 역사는 인류의 원형과 관련되기 때문이다. 내면의 원형적 내용이 투사를 통해 외부에 드러나는데, 상징을 통해 드러나게 된다고 보았다. 오늘날 사상사에서 차지하는 융의 위상을 결코 낮게 평가할 수 없다. 우리가 융의 영지주의를 살펴봄으로써 심리학과 다른 사상들과 소통할 수 있는 기회가 되길 기대한다.

The psychologist C. G. Jung broadened his interests to the various departments within which is the study of Gnosticism. The codex I of Nag Hammadi Library has been named “The Jung codex”, because Jung was deeply involved with it. The study of Nag Hammadi Library is important and has to be continued. Therefore, the psychologist Jung’s achievement of Gnosticism helps us to understand Nag Hammadi and Gnosticism richly. My theme is about this question, “How Jung understood Gnosticism?” I would like to survey many books which Jung wrote. Jung explains Gnosticism by his psychological tools which embrace archetype, projection, and symbol. Jung’s Alchemy understanding is similar to understanding of Gnosticism. According to Jung, the Alchemy and the Gnosticism is a projection of human. Gnosticism’s long history views it’s relation to archetype. Human archetype is revealed outside by projection and is viewed in symbols. Today, we don t have to underestimate Jung s influence. Jung s Gnosticism understanding will help us to understand psychology and other thoughts.
