500th Reformation Special: Research of Luther and Calvin’s Sermon on the Mount/Sermon on the Plain

마태복음 5-7장에 나오는 산상설교는 누가복음 6:20-49에 평지설교로 평행이 되는데, 이를 공관복음서 연구학자들은 마태복음과 누가복음의 공통자료라는 뜻으로 예수말씀 복음서 Q에서 산상/평지설교라 부른다. 본 연구는 공관복음 연구방법론의 비교연구에서 필수적인 마태복음과 누가복음 사이에 공통되는 예수말씀에 관한 연구를 진행하고, 마태복음 5:43-45, 38-42; 7:12; 5:46-48; 7:1-2; 15:14; 10:24-25a;7:3-5과 누가복음 6:27-42에 평행되는 명령법으로 표현된 천국시민의 10계명을 비교함으로써 루터와 칼빈이 과연 산상/평지설교에 나타난 예수말씀을 어떻게 비교연구하고 있는지 그리고 팔복을 통해서 주시는 예수말씀을 통해 어떤 개혁 신앙적 가르침을 발견하였는지를 연구하고자 한다. 본 연구를 통하여 팔복을 중심으로 한 우리 그리스도인이 추구해야할 복도 분명해졌다. ‘고난 받는 것이 내게 유익’이라고 고백하였던 사도 바울의 신앙을 개혁신앙으로 완성한 루터와 칼빈을 본받아서, 우리 모두 그리스도의 남은 고난을 우리의 삶 속에서 이루기 위하여 진실한 삶을 살아야 한다. 심령이 가난하고, 애통하고, 온유하고, 의에 주리고 목마르고, 긍휼히 여기고, 마음이 청결하고, 화평케 하고, 의를 위하여 핍박을 받는 것이 복(μακάριοι) 그 자체이다. 이 얼마나 우리가 생각하고 있는 복과는 사뭇 다른가? 자신의 이익을 위해서가 아니라 남에게 유익을 주는 삶이 궁극적으로 복 있는 삶이다. 남과 더불어 누리는 복이 많은 사람이 또한 복 있는 사람들(μακάριοι)이다. 이러한 관심사항과 관련하여 마지막으로 본 연구는 루터와 칼빈이 산상/평지설교의 팔복을 어떻게 이해하고 또한 팔복이라는 예수말씀을 통해서 신학적으로 개혁신앙의 기치를 들고 나가는데 어떤 기초적인 교훈으로 삼는지를 연구하려는 목적이 있다.

The Sermon on the Mount that appears in the Gospel of Matthew chapter 5-7 is parallel to the Sermon on the Plain written in the Gospel of Luke 6:20-49. Scholars of the Synoptic Gospels view it as a common material of the Gospel of Matthew and the Gospel of Luke and call it the Sermon on the Mount/Sermon on the Plain in the Jesus’ Sayings, the Sayings Gospel Q. This research will analyze the common Jesus’ Sayings between the Gospel of Matthew and the Gospel of Luke. This kind of comparative research is essential among research methodologies of the Synoptic Gospels. By comparing the 10 commandments given to the citizens of heaven which appear as parallel verses in Matthew 5:43-45, 38-42; 7:12; 5:46-48; 7:1-2; 15:14; 10:24-25a; 7:3-5 and Luke 6:27-42, this research will see whether Martin Luther and John Calvin compares Jesus’ Sayings within the Sermon on the Mount/Sermon on the Plain. Moreover, whether they found some kind of teaching of the reformative faith in the Beatitudes of Jesus’ Sayings. Through this research, the blessing that Christians should pursue becomes even more defined by focusing in the Beatitudes. Apostle Paul testifies that ‘it is good for me to be afflicted.’ Following the example of Paul’s faith, Luther and Calvin formulated a reformative faith. We should all undergo the remaining hardships of Christ and live a truthful life. The poor, those who mourn, the meek, those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, the merciful, the pure in heart, the peacemakers, those who are persecuted because of righteousness; they are blessed (μακάριοι). Isn’t this quite different from what we think of the blessed? Not to look out for one’s own interests but a life that gives to others is the ultimate blessed life the blessed people (μακάριοι). Lastly, with this particular interest, the purpose of this research is to see how Luther and Calvin understands the Beatitudes within the Sermon on the Mount/Sermon on the Plain. Moreover, the purpose of this research is to see how the Reformists look at the Beatitudes, Jesus’ Sayings, and analyze the basic precept which they create in order to pursue and define the reformative faith theologically.
