This short paper is for researching an important historical reason why Q sayings were edited or written by a Matthean writer. They weren t put in the Gospel of Matthew in a simple historical process, but through so complicated historical or socially various conflicts experienced by his community. His opponents tried to lower the status of Jesus Christ into a mere human being as the rabbi who explained and instructed the Hebrew Bible. They don t accept Jesus as a divine being who came to this cosmos for saving the human beings. It was not acknowledged by Matthew. If he would ve been persuaded by his opponents, Jesus words hadn t been regarded as those of the divine, and they couldn t have acquired an authoritative power as the divine. Matthew struggles against their own attempt to downgrade and distort what Jesus said and acted. He collected His sayings (Q sayings) and read the Gospel of Mark (what He worked and acted) and the Hebrew Bible. But here is an important question! Who were Matthew s opponents? Before answering this question, we should see what they did against the biblical tradition. First, they try to demote the early christian sayings tradition as human and that of a rabbinic teacher. To them, Jesus was not the Son of God and Christ as the divine savior to save the world. Second, they opposed that God was hanged upon the cross. They thought that the realized human beings only could save themselves. They didn t need a divine being who was sent for saving them from this worldly place. Third, they suggest two gods, first god of grace, second demon and satan. The god who created this material world is satan or devil as the material god. He made man and woman from the earth to use them as slaves. But the god of grace is spiritual and love(1John 4:8). He is invisible and can t be seen thorough our own human eyes. Therefore, if Jesus would ve been the Son of God, he never could be suffered on the cross and come into this worldly or material place. Who were they? “the early christian Gnostics!” They already were in the early Matthean church. Matthew tried to overcome their gnostic ideas with Q sayings, Mark and the Hebrew Bible. This was that why he collected Q sayings and Mark and the Hebrew Bible. He supported Jesus divine authority based on the Hebrew Bible that has been accomplished with God s promise of the Son of Humanity. To Matthew, the divine Son whom God the Father promised in it is Jesus Christ. Therefore, we can know his saving acts and sayings in both Q sayings and Mark, supported by the Hebrew Bible!
