Special prevention in Criminal law and Correction counseling

  • 254

One of the purposes of punishment, special prevention, is to improve and edify criminals and return to society so that they no longer commit crimes. However, it is no easy task to make the person who committed the crime do normal behaviors that are not crimes. It is only possible with a change of personality that a person who has committed a crime avoids the crime and chooses normal behavior in front of the temptation of the crime. Therefore, simply imposing punishment and waiting does not mean that special prevention is achieved. Eventually, in the process of execution, when an effective psychological change program suitable for individual prisoners proceeds for a certain period of time, a slight change in character may occur. There are many programs with this purpose. Among them, the most efficient and basic program is correction counseling. Correction counseling is a program in which a professional correctional counselor meets 1 to 1 or a group of prisoner-type clients, communicates with them, and seeks a new way of life. Corrective counseling is not a one-sided education or admonition, but rather induces the prisoner to heal the psychological wounds and open a new life in the process of dialogue at the same level. In correctional counseling, the counselor only plays a role in helping the prisoner s mind change, and makes the prisoner aware of his own problems and potential for improvement, and attempts to change his values and personality. Corrective counseling can play a large role in preventing recidivism in that it promotes autonomous change of the client, not forced. Until now, special prevention has been thought of as having to focus only on superficial acts or to have a momentary mind to avoid crime so as not to commit crime or delinquency in prison facilities or society. However, without a change of fundamental personality, the psychology of crime avoidance in front of the temptation of crime is likely to become an ideology. Corrective counseling is the most basic and common special prevention program for personality change. You can start with correctional counseling and develop into a religious program or a mind-changing program. Therefore, efforts should be made to make correctional counseling more common. To this end, it is necessary to cultivate experts for correctional counseling, and the state must deeply recognize the importance of correctional counseling. In addition, the state should significantly expand the budget for correctional counseling, and correctional officials should provide administrative support so that correctional counseling can be carried out smoothly. Corrective counselors should conduct counseling with patience for the prevention and rehabilitation of the client, and endeavor to ensure that corrective counseling is well linked with other rehabilitation programs.
