Negative Effects of Hosting Mega Sporting-events

이 연구는 올림픽 유치에 막대한 자본과 노력이 투입되는 만큼 올림픽 개최의 타당성과 합리성을 확인하는 기회를 갖고자 한다. 메가 스포츠 이벤트로서 올림픽 개최의 파급효과는 정치, 경제, 사회문화, 유산, 지역, 시설, 환경 등 다양한 분야와 관련하여 조사되었다. 그러나 주로 긍정적인 측면만이 부각되었으며, 올림픽 개최의 부정적인 효과에 대해서는 간과되었다. 따라서 이 연구는 경제적 가치, 사회문화적 측면, 정치적 개최결정과정, 올림픽 문화유산, 올림픽과 환경오염 이슈를 토대로 올림픽 개최를 통해 파생되는 부정적인 측면들을 다각적인 시각으로 고찰하였다. 올림픽 개최와 관련한 폭넓은 선행연구 검토와 자료조사를 통해 몇 가지 결론을 도출하였다. 첫째, 올림픽과 같은 메가 스포츠 이벤트 개최 효과에 대한 사실적이고 현실적인 인지가 필요하다. 둘째, 메가 스포츠 이벤트 개최의 인프라와 시설의 효율적인 활용이 필요하다. 셋째, 올림픽 개최 도시의 선정에 있어서 투명하고 합리적인 과정과 절차가 중요하다. 마지막으로, 올림픽 유치로 인한 환경오염은 그린 올림픽 표방에 반하는 모순되는 결과이다. 각국의 입장에서 올림픽 개최 시 긍정적인 효과들이 다른 부정적인 효과들을 극복해 낼 만큼의 가치가 있는지 신중히 검토해 볼 필요가 있다.

The purpose of this study was to have an opportunity to confirm its validity and rationality as huge capital and efforts are invested in hosting the Olympics. The ripple effects of hosting the Olympics as a mega-sporting event were investigated in relation to various fields such as politics, economy, social culture, heritage, regions, facilities, and the environment. However, mainly the positive aspects of hosting the Olympics were highlighted, and its negative effects were overlooked. Therefore, based on economic validity, socio-cultural aspects, political policy making, legacy, and issues of Olympics and environment, the study reviewed the negative aspects derived from the hosting of the Olympics from a variety of perspectives. Several conclusions were drawn from a wide range of prior study reviews and research on the hosting of the Olympics. First, a realistic perception of the effects of hosting mega-sporting events like the Olympics is needed. Second, efficient utilization of infrastructure and facilities for hosting mega sporting events is needed. Third, in selecting the host city, transparent procedures and reasonable processes are important Finally, the problem of environmental pollution in the Olympics is an ironic result against the Olympic movement that claims the Green Olympic Games. For each country, it is necessary to carefully examine whether the positive effects of hosting the Olympics are worth overcoming other negative effects.
