1882년에 발표된 ｢후견인 카스텐｣은 급변하는 19세기 독일 제국성립기의 산업화 과정에서 드러나는 문제점을 사실적으로 묘사한 작품이다. 이 시대의 독일은 현대화와 산업화가 급격하게 진행되면서 경제적 이윤과 물질적 가치, 성공이 새로운 삶의 기준으로 떠올랐다. 이로 인해 전통적인 교양 시민계급의 덕목인 정신적 가치들이 새로운 삶의 기준과 충돌하였다. 교양 시민계급의 카스텐은 가난한 사람들을 돕는 후견인이기도 하다. 그러나 그의 아들 하인리히는 아버지와는 다른 가치관을 지니고 있으며, 투기를 통한 경제적 성공을 꿈꾼다. 두 사람의 사고의 차이는 결국 부자간의 갈등과 가족의 몰락으로 이어지는 파국으로 치달으며, 현대화 과정의 단면을 드러내고 있다.

Published in 1882, Carsten Curator, a short story by Theodor Storm, is a realistic depiction of the problems revealed in the industrialization of the rapidly changing German Empire in the 19th century. Profits, materialistic values and successful career, etc emerged as new goals in life while the German Empire was going through rapid modernization and quick industrialization. As a result, the traditional spiritual values of the bourgeoisie came in conflict with the newly emerging ones. A man of the cultured bourgeoisie, Carsten doubles as a guardian helping the poor. But his son, Heinrich, has a different set of values from Carsten s and dreams of making a fortune by speculation. The difference between the two in the way of thinking ends tragically in a father-son conflict and the collapse of their family.
