『장인걸전(張人傑傳)』의 인물 형상과 서사 방식

고소설 역사의 끝자락에 출현한 『장인걸전』은 전대의 서사문학이 지닌 여러 특징을 두루 활용한 결과물로 보인다. 신화에서 유래한 영웅의 일대기 구조를 근간으로 삼으면서도 계급사회의 위선을 풍자한 『배비장전』과 요괴 퇴치의 민담을 바탕으로 삼은 『이화전』의 인물 형상과 서사 구조를 차용하였기 때문이다. 장인걸은 천상계에 속하는 신성한 인물이라기보다는 현실 세계의 문제를 해결하는 영웅적 면모를 보이는데, 이는 특히 『배비장전』에 보이는 세속적인 인물 형상을 수용한 데서 잘 나타난다. 이를 통해 영웅소설에 나타나기 어려운 현실에 대한 비판의식의 형상화가 가능해진다. 또한 『이화전』의 서사 구조와 비슷한 양상을 보이면서도 유가 사상에 입각한 문화적 영웅의 면모를 강조하거나 자주적인 민족의식을 형상화했다는 특징을 보이기도 한다. 이는 전대 서사의 장점을 포용하면서도 누구나 쉽게 공감할 수 있는 인물 및 화소를 적극적으로 활용하려 한 의도 때문으로 보인다. 전대 소설의 장점을 취합하려 한 시도는 대중적 인기를 얻으려는 방편에 해당하지만, 서사의 논리성과 인물의 개연성을 약화시키는 단점을 만들어내기도 한다.

Jangingeoljeon[張人傑傳], which appears to have created at the end of the history of ancient novels, seems to be the result of utilizing the features of past narratives. It is based on the heroic narrative, whose protagonist is a hero from the myth, but borrowed from the narrative structure of Baibijangjeon[裵裨將傳], which is a satirical novel that satirizes the hypocrisy of class society, and Ihwajeon[李華傳] based on a story that is close to folklore. Jangingeol is closer to realistic character than a hero as a celestial being, especially in the acceptance of the secular figures shown in Baibijangjeon. This makes it possible to criticize reality that is difficult to appear in hero novels. In contrast to the narrative structure of Ihwajeon, despite its commonality, the Jangingeol is characterized by emphasizing the face of a Confucian hero or embodying an independent national consciousness. This seems to be due to the intention to secure the popularity by actively using the characters and motifs that the public can easily relate to while embracing the narratives of the past. Such attempts can be popular, but they also have the disadvantage of reducing the probability or logic of narratives and characters.
