쌍매당 이첨은 고려와 조선 두 조정에 모두 출사한 문인 관료이다. 고려에서는 간관으로 큰 활약을 하였으며, 조선에서는 두 차례의 명나라 사행과 역사서 편찬 등의 업적을 남겼다. 출생과 성장기의 기록은 찾아볼 수 없지만, 충청도 당진을 기반으로 중앙정계에 진출한 대표적 신흥사대부 문인이다. 쌍매당은 국자감시에서부터 두각을 나타내기 시작하여 공민왕의 친시에서 장원을 차지함으로써 본격적인 고려 조정의 관료로 활동하였다. 그는 이미 과업을 준비할 때부터 간쟁으로 군주를 바로잡고 국가를 위해 헌신하고자 하는 목표를 세웠으며, 이러한 행적이 있는 중국의 역사 인물에 대한 시를 지으며 그 의지를 확고히 하기도 하였다. 그는 실제로 신돈이나 이이첨과 같은 권신들이 조정을 어지럽힐 때 조금의 타협도 없이 간관으로서 그 부당함을 지적하였으며, 이로 인하여 좌천되거나 유배를 당하기도 하였다. 조선이 건국되고 6년간 새로운 조정에 출사하지 않았으나, 태조가 그 능력을 인정하고 크게 쓰겠다는 말에 힘입어 다시 관료의 길로 들어섰다. 쌍매당이 조선의 조정에서 이룬 가장 대표적인 업적은 두 차례 남경으로의 사행이다. 5개월이 넘는 긴 여정의 사행길에서 전조에 대한 회고와 안타까움을 토로하기도 하였지만, 대체로 자신의 능력을 믿어준 임금에 대한 충정을 표현하였다. 쌍매당의 고려와 조선에서 보여준 이와 같은 삶의 자세는 여말선초 시기 두 조정에서 관료 생활을 하였던 신흥사대부들의 고민을 엿볼 수 있으며, 어떤 환경에 있더라도 자신이 맡은 임무를 묵묵히 수행하는 문인 관료의 자세를 보여준 것이다.

Ssangmaedang Lee Cheom is a literary bureaucrat who took up a public office in both the Goryeo and Joseon courts. In Goryeo, he played a great role as an official doing remonstrance, and in Joseon he left achievements such as two times of envoy travelig to the Ming dynasty and the compilation of historical books. Although no records of birth and growth can be found, he is a representative literary man of the newly emerging illustrious officials who advanced to the central politics based on Dangjin, Choongcheong-do. Ssangmae-dang began to stand out from the test of Kukjagam and took over as a manor in the test of King Gongmin in person, thereby working as the official of the Goryeo court. From the time he was preparing for the task, he set the goal of correcting the monarchs through remonstrance and devoting for the dynasty, which can be confirmed in his early poems. After Joseon was founded, he did not take up a public office in a new court for six years, but thanks to Taejo s recognition of his ability and saying that he would use it largely, he entered the path of bureaucracy again. The two most representative achievements that Ssangmae-dang achieved in the Joseon Dynasty were their two times of envoy traveling to Nanjing. On a long trip over five months, he expressed his regrets and retrospect about Goryeo, but generally expressed his loyalty to the king, who believed in his abilities. Ssangmaeedang s attitude of life like this shows the worries of the Snewly emerging illustrious officials who lived as bureaucrats in the two courts in late Goryeo and early Joseon and also reveals the attitude of a literary bureaucrat who silently fulfills his duties no matter what circumstances.
