Dong-Ju Yoon’s Christology — Jesus Christ Represented in His Poetry

윤동주(尹東柱, 1917-1945)의 시(詩)에서 드러나는 신학 세계를 총체적으로 탐구하기 위한 연구 작업의 일환으로 시도되는 이 논문은 그의 시(詩)에서 드러나는 예수 그리스도의 모습을 집중적으로 다루되, 신학적으로 분석하고 재구성하고자 한다. 이를 위하여 그의 시(詩)에 대한 신학적 접근을 취하며, 특히 기독론적인 접근을 취한다. 그리고 ‘예수 그리스도’ 또는 ‘십자가’를 직접적으로 언급한 시(詩)들을 자료로 삼아 다루고자 한다. 또한 이러한 단어들이 직접적으로 사용된 것은 아니지만, 예수 그리스도 또는 십자가와 연관된 시(詩)들을 함께 다룬다. 1941년 5월 31일에 쓰여진 「십자가」, 1934년 12월 24일에 쓰여진 「초 한 대」, 그리고 1940년 12월에 쓰여진 「팔복」을 중심으로 다룬다. 이 논문에서의 작업을 통하여 볼 때 윤동주의 시(詩)에서 드러나는 예수 그리스도의 핵심적인 모습은 십자가에서의 고난과 죽음의 모습이지만, 그것을 춤으로 승화시킨 행복한 예수 그리스도의 모습이다. 이런 점에서 윤동주의 기독론은 예수 그리스도의 신성과 인성에 초점을 두는 형이상학적 기독론에 집중하지 않으며, 또한 신성에서 인성으로 나아가는 ‘위로부터의 기독론’(Christology from above)도 아니다. 오히려 ‘아래로부터의 기독론’(Christology from below)으로서 눈물과 피를 흘리시며 십자가에서의 고난과 죽음을 당하는 예수 그리스도에 집중한다. 예수 그리스도는 자신의 희생을 통하여 어두운 세계를 밝히시며 향내를 풍기시는 변화와 소망의 예수 그리스도이시며, 고난과 죽음 자체를 춤으로 승화시키며 행복을 느끼는 예수 그리스도이시다. 이러한 기독론은 또한 우리 그리스도인들의 삶과 바로 연결된다. 즉 윤동주의 기독론은 기독교 윤리와 매우 밀접한 관계에 있다.

This paper is part of a research project to comprehensively explore the theological world represented in Dong-Ju Yoon’s (1917-1945) poems. It focuses on the image of Jesus Christ in Yoon’s poetry to analyze and reconstruct it theologically. To this end, it takes a theological approach, and especially a Christian approach to his poetry. In addition, it deals with poems that directly mention “Jesus Christ” or “the cross.” Also, although these words are not used directly, it also deals with poems related to Jesus Christ or the cross. Throughout the work of this paper, the core image of Jesus Christ represented in his poems is that of suffering and death on the cross, but also the image of the happy Jesus Christ sublimated through dance. In this aspect, Yoon’s Christology is not primarily metaphysical, which focuses on the divinity and humanity of Jesus Christ. And it is not “Christology from above” that goes from divinity to humanity. Rather, as “Christology from below,” it focuses on Jesus Christ shedding tears and blood in the suffering and death on the cross. Jesus Christ is the one who gives change and hope, illuminating the dark world through his sacrifice and refreshing the world through his scent. Jesus Christ is the one who sublimates suffering and death through dance and feelings of happiness. This Christology is also directly connected to the lives of Christians who are to follow Jesus Christ. In other words, Dong-Ju Yoon’s Christology is very closely related to Christian ethics.
