A Study on the History of Sosŏl (1): Concept of Sosŏl, 1919-1929

This thesis aims at contemplating the continuous change in the history of concept ‘sosŏl’ which not only corresponds to related concepts in other cultural circumstance such as ‘novel’ or ‘roman’ in Europe and ‘shosetu ’ or ‘xiaoshuo’ in East Asia but also has differences between them. The method of conceptual history is able to be applied to the analysis process. As the result, I can confirm the fact that the concept of sosŏl in 1920s had wide extension which was composed of traditional concept and newly introduced concept from the outside, and the situation that the concept of sosŏl pursuing western and modern tried to negate counter concepts but the trial only had an restricted effect among the professional writers. It can be said that the unexcluded area were discovered as a new subject in this conceptual study on ‘sosŏl’.
