노년기 남성의 배우자 사별 이후 삶에 대한 질적연구

Qualitative Research on the Elderly Men’s Life after Spousal Berevement

본 연구는 노년기 남성의 배우자 사별 이후 삶의 경험과 그 의미를 탐색하고자 하였다. 이를 위하여 배우자 사별 이후 2년 이상이 경과한 노년기 남성 5명을 대상으로 심층 면접을 진행하였고, 해석 현상학적 분석(Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis: IPA) 방법을 적용하여 자료를 분석하였다. 연구결과 노년기 남성의 배우자 사별 이후 삶은 다음과 같은 주제로 나타났다. 첫째, ‘죽음의 실체 앞에서 존재의 무력함’으로 연구참여자들은 느닷없이 닥친 아내의 죽음으로 비탄과 회의에 압도되고 안전기지가 무너진 일상을 경험하였다. 둘째, ‘나약함을 들키기보다 고립됨’으로 언제든지 사라질 수 있는 삶의 무망감과 주변 상황의 변화에 상처받으며 나약함을 드러내지 않기 위해 세상으로부터 스스로 고립을 선택하고자 하였다. 셋째 ‘새로운 정체성을 찾아가는 부재 속의 삶’으로 연구참여자들은 배우자 사별로 선명해진 부재 속에서 변화된 자신의 역할을 인식하며 사회적 지지 속에서 새로운 정체성을 지향하였다. 넷째, 배우자 사별을 통해 마주한 죽음의 실체 앞에서 불가역적으로 공존하는 삶과 죽음의 연결성을 확인하고 ‘삶의 또 다른 이름, 죽음을 보듬으며’ 삶의 의미와 가치에 집중하였다. 본 연구는 노년기 남성의 배우자 사별 이후 삶의 경험과 그 심층적인 의미를 탐색함으로써 삶과 죽음의 실체 앞에서 새로운 정체성을 모색하는 노년기 남성의 배우자 사별 경험에 대한 심도있는 이해를 도모하고, 이들을 위한 전문적인 애도과정 조력 및 실천적 개입 방안 모색을 위한 학문적 기초자료를 제시한다는 의의를 갖는다.

This paper aims to explore the life experiences of elderly men after their spouse s death and to derive their meaning. In-depth interviews were conducted with 5 participants who had lost their partners 2 years ago or earlier. The data was analyzed based on Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis. The results of the analysis were grouped under the subject of ‘Helplessness in front of the reality of death’, ‘Choosing isolation rather than revealing weakness’, ‘Living with absence to find a new identity’ and ‘Embracing the death, another name for life’. The details of the study are as follows. First, the participants were overwhelmed by grief and skepticism and experienced the safety base has collapsed in daily life after the sudden death of their wives. Second, older men in the study tried to isolate themselves from the world not to reveal their weakness while being hurt by the hopelessness in life and abrupt changes in surroundings. Third, the participants were aware of their changed roles after realizing the clear-absence of their wives and tried to pursue a new identity with social support. Lastly, the participants witnessed the connection that irreversibly tied life and death after confronting the reality of death with the death of their spouses and focused on the meaning and value of life. This research explored the meaning and the experience of the elderly men’s life after the spousal bereavement and attempted to have in-depth understanding of their experience in finding a new identity, facing the reality of life and death. Also, this study presents the basic academic data to assist the professional mourning process and seek practical ways to help them.
