철강산업과 BCI 간의 상호관련성 분석

The Correlation Between Steel Industry and BCI

본 연구는 BCI(Baltic Capesize Index)가 최초로 고시된 1999년 3월부터 2021년 3월까지의 철강산업의 주(major)원료가격, 물동량, Capesize 선복량 그리고 세계조강생산량의 실증자료를 이용해 흐름을 파악하고, 시계열 분석을 통해 BCI와의 상호관련성을 파악하고자 하였다. 변수들의 기술적 통계값을 알아보기 위해 기술통계분석을 사전 실시 후 단위근 검정과 공적분 검정을 진행하고, VECM(벡터오차수정 모형)을 통해 해운시장과 철강시장의 대표 변수들 간의 동태적 특성을 분석하였다. 단위근 검정결과 6개의 변수가 모두 단위근을 가지고 있어 자기상관의 존재를 알 수 있었으며, Granger 인과관계 검정을 통해 철강산업의 주원료 가격은 BCI에 상호 유의한 영향을 주고, 물동량 측면에서는 원료탄이 BCI에 영향을 주는 것을 확인하였다. 또한, 이번 연구를 통해 새롭게 확인한 세계조강생산량은 BCI로부터 영향을 받고 있다는 상관관계를 확인하였다. 이를 통해 원자재가격 상승이 BCI의 동반 상승을 유도하는 것을 예상할 수 있으며, 이는 기대 이론에 따른 BCI의 상호 구조가 성립함을 시사했다. 나아가 충격반응 분석을 통해 신뢰구간의 상한과 하한이 모두 양(+)의 구간에 있는 철광석 가격은 단기와 장기에 있어 BCI와 모두 유의미한 것을 확인하였다. 마지막으로 예측오차 분산분해 결과 BCI의 자체충격이 장기까지 가장 높았고, 상대적으로 가장 많은 영향력을 가지는 변수는 바로 철광석가격이었으며, 다른 상대 변수들에 BCI에 전이되는 충격이 가장 높다는 것을 알 수 있었다.

Purpose : This research focuses on finding the relationship between the Baltic Exchange Capesize Index(BCI) and the overall impact caused by factors including the price changes in raw materials in the steel industry, seaborne trades, and development of capesize vessels. Research design, data, methodology : After conducting descriptive statistical analysis by examining the period ranging from 1999 to 2021, including the percussion of COVID-19 made a clear mark, to identify the correlation of variables, followed by the Unit root and Cointegration test, a Vector error correction model(VECM) has been used in order to understand the dynamic characteristics of the key variables of the maritime and steel market. Results : According to the result, presented findings that the price of raw material of the steel industry and BCI have mutually significant influences and in addition the study revealed a new correlation between world crude steel production and BCI, where the crude steel production was affected by the BCI. Conclusions : In times when COVID-19 presents a challenge marked by unpredictability and characteristics unforeseen by patterns and trends of past economic crisis, the raw material market needs to be examined in a new light as a key factor for practitioners when analyzing and predicting the market in the decision making processes using BCI.
