Application Ability of Heavy Metal-tolerant Strains to the Heavy Metal Polluted Wastewater

Bacteria isolated from industrial wastewater enable to remove heavy metals, such as cadmium, lead, zinc and copper. Among the bacteria strains investigated, Pseudomonas putida, P. aeruginosa, P. chlororaphis and P stutzeri were found to be strongly resistant to and efficiently removed cadmium, lead, zinc and copper, respectively. As a fundamental experiment on applying the microbial strains which enable to treat heavy metal, the application ability of these microbial strains to heavy metals wastewater treatment, optimum treatment conditions, such as temperature, pH and micoorganisms concentration(MLSS : Mixed Liquor Suspended Solid), the removal rate of each heavy metal in manmade wastewater according to HRT(Hydraulic Retention Time) was investigated. Removal rate of cadmium, lead, zinc and copper by each heavy metal-tolerant bacteria strain in manmade wastewater was about 70%, 90%, 85% and 30%, respectively, when measured 48 hours after treating in the batch culture media containing 100 mg/ℓ of each heavy metal. Judging from these results, the ability of each strain for treating each heavy metal in wastewater was excellent. Therefore these strains were considered to be applicable to industrial wastewater treatment. The optimum temperature, pH and MLSS concentration in batch culture media were 30℃, pH 7∼8 and 3000 mg/ℓ, respectively, when each strain was applied to each heavy metal wastewater treatment.
