Treatment Ability of Heavy Metals-tolerant Microorganisms to Manmade Heavy Metals Polluted Wastewater in Activated Sludge Process

  • 7

Bacteria enable to remove heavy metals, such as cadmium, lead, zinc and copper were isolated from industrial wastewater. Among the bacteria strains investigated, Pseudonwnas putida, P. aeruginosa, P. chlororaphis and P. stuizeri were found to be strongly resistant and efficiently removed cadmium, lead, zinc and copper, respectively. When each heavy metal was treated in the manmade wastewater with each heavy metal-tolerant strain in the pilot plant of an activated sludge process, removal rate of each heavy metal was investigated according to HRT(Hydraulic Rentention Time) 12 hr, 24 hr and 48 hr. The temperature, pH and l\!ILSS concentration in the pilot plant of an activated sludge process were 30℃, pH 7~8 and 3000 mg/l, respectively, when each strain was applied to each heavy metal wastewater treatment. The removal rates of cadmium; lead, zinc and copper by each heavy metal-tolerant bacteria at 12 days after treatment was about 90%, 93%, 80% and 50%, respectively, when 100 mg/l of each cadmium, lead, zinc and copper was inoculated in manmade wastewater and when HRT was controlled to 24 hours.
