This paper aims to reconsider the translator as a rewriter based on Lefevere’s theory of rewriting. Lefevere defines ’translation as the most obvious kind of rewriting’ and asserts its legitimacy in terms of restraints of ideology, patronage, and poetics. In this regard, with excerpts from S. E. Hinton sTheOutsiders and itsKorean translations - the two texts in 1991 and the one in 2004, the study examines and discusses whether those translations can be claimed rewritings or not. The Outsiders is an appropriate text for the analysis according to Even-Zohar’s Polysystem theory because it is one of themasterpieces ofNewrealismand regarded as a bible of American Young Adult Literature, and translated into Korean consecutively. This analysis allows figuring out whether there are any significant differences between the three translations. This paper could also provide an opportunity to think about the attitudes and values a translator should pursue as a rewriter.
