An Examination of VSD-based AAC Intervention for Children with Complex Communication Needs

연구목적: 이 연구의 목적은 시각장면 디스플레이(Visual Scene Display; VSD)를 적용한 AAC 중재에 나타난 VSD의 특성을 AAC Technologies 구성요소별로 분석하고, 이를 토대로 의사소통장애 아동을 위한 VSD 기반의 AAC 중재 적용 가능성을 살펴보는 데 있다. 연구방법: 2016년 6월 이전에 발표된 의사소통장애 아동을 대상으로 이루어진 연구논문과 VSD 관련한 학회 발표·포럼자료, 홈페이지 게시자료, 신문기사 등을 분석하여 VSD 기반 AAC 중재를 위한 핵심어휘와 상징체계의 선정, 레이아웃 및 상징조직, 내비게이션, 선택기법, 메시지 산출의 특징에 대해 알아보았다. 연구결과: VSD는 주로 영·유아를 대상으로 실시되었으며, 핵심어휘는 AAC 사용자가 경험한 일 또는 일상생활 위주의 실제장면과 관련된 어휘를 중심으로 핵심어휘를 선정하였고, 상징체계는 일상생활 또는 경험을 의사소통에 필요한 핵심어휘가 잘 드러나도록 촬영한 장면 사진을 활용하였다. 장면 사진 위에 나타난 인물, 사물과 특정 대상 위에 직접 핫스팟(hotspot)을 설정하여 레이아웃을 구성하였고, 내비게이션은 목표 어휘의 선택이 용이할 수 있도록 다양한 단서들을 장면 사진 위에 추가로 제공하였다. 또 상징 선택방법은 장면 사진에 보이는 대상을 직접 선택하는 방법을 적용하였다. 의사소통 상대에게 전달되는 메시지는 AAC 사용자의 연령, 성별 등을 고려하여 기기에 직접 녹음한 음성이 출력되도록 구성되었다. 결론: VSD 기반 AAC 중재의 특징을 정리한 결과를 바탕으로 의사소통장애아를 위한 AAC 중재를 위해 핵심어휘와 상징체계의 선정, 레이아웃 및 상징 조직, 내비게이션, 선택방법, 메시지 산출을 중심으로 논의하였다.

Purpose: The purpose of the study was to examine the applicability of VSD-based AAC systems for children with complex communication needs. Method: Empirical studies, presentation, newspaper articles and so on published until June 2016 were selected and reviewed according to vocabulary selection, layout and organization, navigation, selection techniques, and message output methods of VSD-based AAC system. Results: Analysis revealed that vocabularies were selected based on daily life activities or specific events while using pictures that well captured language concepts for communication. Direct hotspot on the referents(people, item, events, etc.) in context was set up for layout and organization. Navigation provided additional targeted vocabulary- related cues on the pictures, and direct selection techniques were employed to make the manipulation easy and intuitive. Voice output methods allowed direct recording voices considering age and sex of AAC users. Conclusion: Based on the findings, considerations and applicability of VSD-based AAC systems were discussed.
