Case Alternation in Korean: Case and Beyond

  • 18

It has been argued that various constructions such as so called exceptional case marking and auxiliary verb constructions show genuine instances of case alternation. Building on this hypothesis, various approaches have been proposed for the analysis of case alternation in these constructions, assuming lul-marking is invariably the accusative case marker in Korean following the original proposal in Choi (1961). With a critical review of these constructions arguably involving the so called case alternation, I will show that none of the proposals in Korean give a satisfactory account for the phenomenon and conclude that genuine case alternation does not exist in Korean contrary to the standard assumption in the literature.
