Diachronic Formal Syntax: V>P reanalysis in Korean

This paper argues that V>P diachronic reanalysis (‘grammaticalization’) in Korean can be best understood as a change in the selection of a category-determining element and √ROOT under Marantz s (1997) system: the extension to a range of the selection of little x. This implies that all the mechanisms that are needed for the reanalysis are already available and independently motivated in the grammar such as little x s and √ROOTs, and, furthermore, reanalysis as diachronic mechanism can be thus derivable and be replaced with principles which provide the explanations for synchronic variations in the grammar. One of the important theoretical implications of this view on grammaticalization is that empirical phenomena that diachronic reanalysis as one of main grammaticalization mechanisms has so far provided can be accounted for by principles used to explain synchronic variations.
