This paper makes a corpus-based study of English passive and inversion constructions. The discussion of this study is mainly based on the search results of the passive and inversion constructions from the ICE-GB and BNC. We found that there are many types of passive and inversion constructions and that each type of constructions has general properties. For example, there are two types of inversion constructions: subject-aux inversion and subject-verb inversion constructions. We try to provide a constraint-based analysis of passive and inversion constructions. Following Jong-bok Kim and Peter Sells (2008), we treated those constructions by using both lexical rules such as passive lexical rule, prepositional passive lexical rule and adjectival passive lexical rule and constraints such as subject-aux inversion rule and locative inversion argument realization. In order to explain other types of constructions, we need so-called stylistic inversion argument realization.
