This study aimed to examine the collocability of basic word list in the 2007 updated National Curriculum. To do this, a lexical collocation type, verb+noun objective was selected and compiled a List Ⅰ. Many of these are very common and useful collocations in English but teaching all of them is not efficient as well as not possible. Thus, another list of collocations was compiled out of List Ⅰ to reduce the burden of learning and to increase the usefulness of the collocations. This List Ⅱ contains a kind of medium-strength collocations. Collocations can be seen as they constitute a continuum from strong combinations to weak ones depending on the degree of association between two words. Six criteria were established for selecting medium-strength collocations. Three criteria― frequency, collocability, and delexicalizedness― were used for selecting verbs, the bases of collocations. The other three criteria―semantic unpredictability, abstractness, and existence of translation equivalent― were applied to examine the semantic characteristics of collocations. From a pedagogical viewpoint, unpredictable combinations of high-frequency words rather than those which are most strongly or weakly bonded need to be learned first. In other words, medium strength collocations consisting of basic words should be taught primarily. Learning more words does not simply mean learning a new words, rather it is often learning familiar words in new combinations.
