The formal noun `kes in the language displays a complex array of grammatical properties. This paper deals with its use in imperative constructions. We first review the basic properties of kes in imperative constructions, and then look in the process of its grammaticalization. In particular, we assume that the ‘kes’ imperative construction was derived from the meaning of future via phonological/morphological reduction to denote a directive meaning. We also compare the kes imperative construction with the Japanese koto ‘thing’ imperative construction which appears to have undergone a similar process of grammaticalization to the Korean counterpart.
