Reviewing recent approaches to do-support, this paper proposes that both the subject/nonsubject asymmetry and incompatibility of do-support with locative inversion can be accounted for in terms of economy in feature checking in the sense of Pesetsky and Torrego (2000). Arguing against Pesetsy and Torrego s claim that the wh-subject undergoes movement to [Spec,CP] via [Spec,TP], it is proposed that the movement should be parallel in the sense of Chomsky (2005). Contra Chomsky (2005), however, the EF of the phase head C is assumed to be uQ or uTop to account for unavailability of do-support in root subject wh-questions and locative inversion constructions. And the option of do-support is assumed to be constrained by economy considerations proposed in Pesetsky and Torrego (2000).
