Grandparent Involvement and Support in Families of Children with Severe Disabilities : Parents Perceptions

중증 장애아 가정에서의 조부모 참여와 지원 : 부모 인식

본 연구는 장애아를 둔 부모들이 장애아 조부모의 참여와 지원에 대해 인식하고 있는 바를 조사하였다. 본 연구는 중증장애아동을 둔 158명의 부모를 대상으로 하였으며, 연구에 참여한 부모들은 조부모 참여 척도와 조부모 지원 척도에 응답하였다. 또한 부모들은 조부모들의 역할과 영향에 관련한 자유 응답식 질문에도 응답하였다. 각 조부모의 참여와 지원에 대한 결과로써, 조부모의 참여와 지원은 외할머니, 친할머니, 외할아버지, 친할아버지의 순으로 높게 나타났다. 이를 정리하면, (1) 할머니들의 참여와 지원이 할아버지들의 참여와 지원보다 높게 나타났으며, (2) 외할머니의 참여와 지원이 친할머니의 참여와 지원보다 높게 나타났고, (3) 외할아버지의 참여와 지원이 친할아버지의 참여와 지원보다 높게 나타났다. 부모들이 기입한 자유 응답식 질문에 대한 응답에서, 부모들은 조부모들로 부터의 정서적, 실질적 지원에 대한 요구를 가장 높게 응답 하였으며, 장애 아동과 부모에 대한 조부모들의 긍정적 역할도 높게 언급되어졌다. 또한 부모들은 조부모들이 장애 손자녀의 장애를 받아들이거나 주변인들에게 장애 손자녀의 존재를 언급하는 것을 꺼리는 경향이 있음을 나타내었다. 또한 부모들은 조부모의 나이와 지리적 거리가 조부모들이 장애아 가족에게 참여와 지원을 제공하는데 있어서 영향을 미친다고 언급하였다.

This study investigated the perceptions of parents who had a child with a disability regarding their child s grandparents involvement and support. The study included 158 parents of children with severe disabilities. The parent participants completed the Grandparent Involvement Scale (GIS) and the Grandparent Support Scale (GSS). In addition, the participants responded to an open-ended question regarding the grandparents role and impact on their families. The results of the GIS and GSS showed that: (a) grandmothers in the study had higher scores than grandfathers, (b) maternal grandmothers had higher scores than paternal grandmothers, and (c) maternal grandfathers had higher scores than paternal grandfathers. In the open-ended question responses, parents noted the needs for emotional and practical support from grandparents, the grandparents positive roles, the grandparents adjustment difficulty, and the impact of the grandparents age and geographical distance on grandparental involvement and support. grandparent, involvement, support, disability, parent
