The primary purpose of this paper is to compare the fundamental assumptions between the mechanism based on interpretation and the mechanism on licensing for the explanation of reflexivization in English. We show that the traditional notion of Binding replaced by the phase theory cannot still cope with the redundancy caused when we assume the derivational system to satisfy the interface system. The alternative mechanism called MSH, we argue, provides optimal generation system guaranteeing the well-formedness as well as the licensing of reflexives without resorting to the (interpretational) filters imposed on their end products.
