An Inter-typological and Intra-typological Analysis of Metaphorical Motion

  • 3

This paper aims to reexamine Talmy s typology by making a two-fold typological comparison among English, Korean, and Turkish. Metaphorically-used motion verbs were the main unit of the data analysis, which showed how deeply metaphor is tied to our way of encoding motion events. In the first analysis, English and Korean writers generally showed S- and V-language patterns respectively, with English writers showing a relatively high use of neutral expressions on the other hand. In the second analysis where results from Ӧzҫalişkan(2005) were partially used, overall similarity in lexicalization patterns was found across the two V-languages while crosslinguistic diversity was detected in their frequency of manner verb uses. Those findings support not only Talmy s typology but also Slobin s (2003) idea that the world languages should be re-ranked on a continuum of manner salience.
