The purpose of this study is to discuss what functional domains Korean and English passives encode. The analysis of our Korean-English parallel corpus shows that Korean passives are translated into English passive, intransitive and transitive clauses, which results from Korean and English passives encoding different functional domains. It is argued that English passives encode topicality defocusing of Agent while Korean passives encode volitionality and empathy defocusing as well as topicality defocusing.
