커버이미지 없음

Gerund phrase constructions have both nominal and verbal properties, and numerous different approaches have been proposed to deal with their mixed properties. In this paper, we provide an account of English and Korean gerund phrase constructions under an Indexed Phrase Structure Grammar framework. This framework employs an independently motivated mechanism, which is necessary for a proper analysis of such constructions as English tough- and comparative constructions. Here we do not need to adopt any costly mechanism or any special category like an empty or a mixed/dual category. We analyze gerund phrases as noun phrases with nominal heads. Gerund phrases are just noun phrases in observance of the basic principles of category determination even though they have some verbal properties.
