삼국유사에 나타난 관세음신앙의 상담적 의의

The Significance of Avalokiteśvara Faith Anecdotes for Counseling in the Samguk-Yusa

본 연구는 『삼국유사(三國遺事)』 속 관세음신앙 일화에 담긴 사람들의 고통과 관세음을 통한 구원의 과정을 살펴보고, 그에 담긴 상담적 의의가 무엇인지 이해하고자 하였다. 이를 위하여 일연(一然)의 『삼국유사』 관세음 일화 12개를 선정, 문헌고찰을 시도하였다. 그 결과 본 연구에서 얻은 내용은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 본 연구에서 살펴본 12편의 『삼국유사』 관세음 일화에는 그 당시 사람들이 겪은 삶의 어려움들과 그 해결과정에 관한 이야기가 담겨 있었고, 이는 상담과 심리치료 과정의 이야기로 이해할 수 있었다. 둘째, 『삼국유사』 속 관세음은 지금-여기의 고난과 고통에 대한 이야기를 듣고, 문제해결의 과정을 조력하는 존재 즉 오늘날 상담자로서의 존재로 등장하였다고 볼 수 있었다. 셋째, 『삼국유사』 속 관세음의 구원 과정에는 인간 성장을 위한 환경 구성의 아이디어를 담고 있었으며, 이는 곧 상담과 심리치료가 지향하는 방향성이라고 볼 수 있었다. 상담과 심리치료에서 내담자가 호소하는 문제는 개인의 문제이기도 하지만, 상호작용하고 있는 시대와 사회의 문제이기도 하다. 이러한 요소가 개인적 삶과 함께 고려될 때, 문화적 요소와 한국적 상담의 방향성은 다시 제고될 수 있을 것이다.

This study considered the suffering of people in anecdotes concerning faith in the bodhisattva Avalokiteśvara found in the Samguk-Yusa as well as salvation through the bodhisattva, and examined their implications for counseling. Twelve anecdotes about Avalokiteśvara were selected from Iryeon s Samguk-Yusa for analysis. The results were as follows. First, the 12 Avalokiteśvara anecdotes in Samguk-Yusa contain stories about people s distress and attempts to cope with it, which could be understood in terms of counseling and psychotherapy. Second, in Samguk-Yusa, Avalokiteśvara appears as a counselor who hears people s suffering and pain and helps solve problems. Third, the process of salvation through Avalokiteśvara in Samguk-Yusa resembles organizing an environment for personal growth, something akin to counseling and the counselor s aims. In counseling and psychotherapy, the problem that the client appeals to is an individual problem, but it is also a social problem with the era of interaction. When these factors are considered with personal life, cultural elements and the direction of Korean counseling can be improved again.
