A Study on the Meaning of Wonder and its Educational Value: Focusing on Exploring the Relationship between Curiosity and Imagination

본 연구의 목적은 호기심, 상상력과 구분되는 경이의 의미와 교육적 가치를 논의하는 데 있다. 경이는 호기심, 상상력의 근간이 되는 감정으로서, 경이를 통해 호기심과 상상력의 질적 신장이 가능하다. 그러나 호기심, 상상력과 구분되지 않는 개념의 모호성으로 인하여 경이는 교육에서 논의되어 오고 있지 않다. 이에 본 연구에서는 호기심, 상상력, 그리고 경이의 개념과 특성을 탐색하고, 이들의 관계를 분석하였다. 무지의 자각에서 발생하는 경이는 탐구의 과정에서 유지되며, 동기부여의 범위가 제한되지 않는다. 또한 호기심, 상상력, 기쁨, 신비, 개방성, 인지초점의 강화 등을 수반하여, 창의적, 철학적 사고의 발전 가능성이 높은 특성을 지닌다. 이러한 경이는 다음과 같은 교육적 가치를 지닌다. 첫째, 무지의 자각을 통해 진정한 앎의 이해와 감응을 가능하게 한다. 둘째, 질문과 반성, 경험의 이해를 바탕으로 새로운 관점의 변화를 가져온다. 이는 사고를 철학적, 창의적으로 이끈다. 셋째, 유장한 호기심, 풍부한 상상력을 수반하는 경이는 호기심과 상상력의 질적 신장을 가져온다. 이러한 경이는 교육의 목표가 된다.

The purpose of this study was to discuss the meaning of wonder distinguished from curiosity and imagination and its educational value. Wonder is an emotion that is the source of curiosity and imagination. Wonder enables the qualitative growth of curiosity and imagination. However, wonder has not been discussed in education due to the ambiguity of concepts indistinguishable from curiosity and imagination. Therefore, this study explored the concepts and characteristics of curiosity, imagination and wonder, and analyzed their relationships. The wonders that arise from the consciousness of ignorance are maintained in the process of exploration, and the range of motivation is not limited. It also entails curiosity, imagination, joy, mystery, openness, and reinforcement of cognitive focus. This has a high possibility of developing creative and philosophical thinking. These wonders have the following educational values. First, through the consciousness of ignorance, it is possible to understand and respond to true knowing. Second, it brings a new perspective change based on questions, reflection, and the understanding of experiences. This leads to thinking philosophically and creatively. Third, wonder, which involves a slow curiosity and a rich imagination, brings a qualitative growth to curiosity and imagination.
