본 연구의 목적은 KJV의 영어표현이 영어 관용구 형성에 끼친 수사적 영향을 연구하는 것이고 이를 위해 번역학적 용인성을 배경으로 하여 수사유형별로 KJV의 원래 성경적 의미와 영어 관용어의 비성경적 의미를 대조 분석했다. 분석결과, 우선 KJV가 그 이전에 이미 존재했던 틴데일 성경의 언어적 기반과 제네바 성경의 용인성 기반 위에서 KJV가 영어권을 대표하는 영어 성경으로 성장할 수 있었으며, 또한 KJV의 영어표현이 다양한 수사적 재구성과정을 거쳐 영어 관용어를 만들어 내고 있다고 분석했다. 연구 방법에 사용된 여섯 가지 수사적 장치는 다음과같다. 두 개의 상반된 이미지가 병행되어 대조 효과를 만드는 모순어법(Oxymoron); KJV에서 거룩한 이미지에서현대 영어에서는 일상성의 가벼운 이미지로 반전하는 점강법(bathos); 실제로 의미하는 성경적 메시지와 현대 영어에서 표현하는 비성경적 메시지가 상반되는 아이러니; 어휘 구조의 반전을 통해 언어적 효과를 만들어 내는 교차대구법(chiasmus); 음성적 펀치(phonetic punch); 그리고 은유(metaphor)이다. 이 논문은 400여 년 전 세상에 나온 KJV 영어표현과 현대 영어의 관용어 표현 간 연결 고리를 번역학과 언어학의 융·복합적 측면에서 접근하여 연구 분석한 것에 의미가 있다.
Based on translation acceptability and linguistics idioms, this paper examined the rhetoric effects of the King James Version (KJV) Bible on English idioms. First, the paper reviewed a historic background of KJV and its preceding English bibles: Geneva Bible and Tyndale Bible to explain how the KJV secured its acceptability as the most widely read English bible. Then, the paper examined how KJV has led English speakers to playfully or cleverly adapt and manipulate some of the KJV biblical expressions into a variety of non-biblical idioms. The author used six rhetorical devices to assess the KJVs linguistic effects on idioms: oxymoron, irony, bathos, chiasmus, phonetic punch and metaphor. In conclusion, the paper found that the KJV expressions are rhetorically alive in modern English; and KJV acceptability is historically rooted on the Tyndale s linguistic subtlety and Geneva Bible s acceptability. The paper is meaningful in using a convergent approach across the bible translation and idiom linguistics to trace the KJV connection with English language.
