A Systematic Theological Reflection on the Personhood of Human Life: Focusing on Its Finitude and Unique Orientation Toward Transcendence

오늘날 생명과학기술의 발전으로 인해 인간 이해의 문제가 새롭게 제기되는 상황에서, 본 논문은 이에 관한 가톨릭 교회 교도권의 최근 가르침에 입각해 신학적 인간학의 종합적 전망과 함께 향후의 연구 과제를 제시하고자 한다. ‘하느님의 모습으로’ 창조된 인간에 대한 인격적 이해는 그 육체성과 초월지향성을 구분하지만, 분리하지 않는 통합성과 전체성 안에서 이루어진다. 육체성은 인간의 ‘세계 내존재성’과 역사성을 드러내며, 인간이 관계적 존재임을 시사한다. 인간의 인격적 관계성과 연대성은 하느님과의 관계, 다른 인간들과의 관계, 그리고 다른 피조물과의 관계 안에서 드러나며, 이는 삼위일체 하느님의 친교에 그 기원을 둔다. 육체성은 또한 인간의 유한성과 사멸성 및 죄악으로 기울어지는 경향성을 의미하기도 한다. 동시에 인간에게는 하느님을 향한 초월지향성이 있다. 결론적으로, 인간은 여러 차원들을 종합적으로 지니는 ‘역설적 존재’이며, 하느님과의 관계성 안에서 자신의 인격을 온전히 실현하게 된다. 향후 신학적 인간학의 연구 과제로서, 생명과학기술 혜택의 불평등 문제, 하느님과 인간 사이의 비유사성을 제거하려는 시도, 트랜스휴머니즘과 뉴에이지의 연계성, 진정한 불사불멸성의 의미 등에 대한 고찰이 필요하다.

The rapid advances in life science and biotechnology are raising a new problem in how we understand human beings. This paper aims to address this situation by offering a novel insight into a perspective in theological anthropology based on the recent teachings of the Magisterium of the Catholic Church. The theological understanding of humans as persons created in the image of God implicates the principles of integrity and totality, which distinguish but do not separate human corporeality and the orientation toward transcendence. This, in turn, reveals humans’ existence as “being-in-the-world” and their historicity, implying that humans are relational beings. The interpersonal relatedness and solidarity of humans are revealed in their relationships with God, each other, and other creatures. And these relationships all originate from the inner communion of the Triune God. Human corporeality further reveals their finitude and mortality, as well as their inclination toward sin and evil. At the same time, humans possess an inherent orientation toward transcendence (i.e. the desire for God). In brief, humans are “paradoxical beings” comprehensively possessing different dimensions, and it is through relationship with God that human personhood is fully realized. The future tasks of theological anthropology include addressing the problem of inequality in who benefits from life science and biotechnology, attempts at extinguishing the dissimilarity between God and humans, the connection between Transhumanism and New Age, and the need to reflect on the true meaning of immortality.
