고등학생의 정신적 웰빙 영향요인 탐색

Exploring the Predictors of High School Students’Mental Health: Using Random Forest Analysis

본 연구는 한국교육종단연구 2013년 패널 자료의 3, 6차년도(중1,고1) 데이터를 활용하여, 고등학교 1학년 학생들의 정신적 웰빙에 영향을 미치는 요인을 탐색하고자 하였다. 자료에 포함된 많은 변수를 최대한 활용하기 위해 랜덤포레스트를 적용하여 분석하였으며, 연구결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 고1 시기의 정신적 웰빙에는 중1보다 고1 시기의 변수들이 절대적인 영향력을 가졌다. 둘째, 고등학생의 정신적 웰빙에는 비학업적이면서 학생 내부적 차원의 변수들(예:‘자아개념’,‘규칙준수’,‘자기이해’,‘봉사활동에 대한 인식’,‘일에 대한 태도’)이 가장 중요한 영향력을 가짐을 확인하였다. 셋째, 비학업적이면서 학생 외부적 차원의 변수들(예:‘학생의견 반영정도’,‘부모와의 상호작용’,‘부모의 정서적 지원’)도 고등학생의 정신적 웰빙에 중요한 것으로 나타났다. 넷째, 교사의‘수업방식’과 학생의‘학업 스트레스’도 고등학생의 정신적 웰빙에 중요한 영향 요인이었다. 본 연구 결과를 통해 고등학생의 정신적 웰빙을 설명하는 주요 요인을 확인하였고 이를 바탕으로 고등학생의 정신적 웰빙 증진을 위한 연구와 노력에 대한 시사점 및 후속 연구에 대한 제언을 논의하였다.

This study aimed to examine the factors that influence the mental health of 17-year-old high school students using the 2013 Korea Education Longitudinal Study (KELS) panel data. A sample of 2,923 Korean adolescents (50.5% girls) participated in surveys on mental health and its potential predictors (e.g., self-concept, parents’ emotional support, teachers’ teaching methods) at 14 and 17 years of age. A random forest analysis was conducted to examine a substantial number of potential factors related to mental health. Results revealed that mental health at age 17 showed stronger correlates with concurrent measures than the factors obtained at age 14. Importantly, the factors in the internal and non-academic sphere (e.g., self-concept) were ranked as the most important predictors of adolescents’ mental health. We also found that external and non-academic factors such as parental emotional support and positive parent-child interaction have significant effects on the mental health of adolescents. Teachers’ teaching methods and academic stress were other factors we found to be important influences on adolescents’ mental health. Practical implications for enhancing the mental health of Korean adolescents were discussed.
