바빙크 신학에서의 제도적 교회와 유기체적 교회 구별에 대한 고찰

A Study on the Distinction between the Institutional and the Organic Church in Bavinck’s Theology

제도로서의 교회와 유기체로서의 교회 구별은 신칼빈주의 교회론의 중요한 특징이다. 그런데 신칼빈주의의 이 구별은 그 공헌을 인정받기도 하지만 비판도 받고 있다. 이 구별에 대한 이런 상반된 평가 가운데 이 논문은 제도적/유기체적 교회 구별에 관한 바빙크(Herman Bavinck, 1854~1921)의 이해를 하나의 중요한 사례연구로 삼아 이 구별에 대한 비판에 응답한다. 이 구별에 대한 비판은 다음의 세 가지로 요약될 수 있다: (1) 이 구별에 따르면 제도적 교회가 유기체적 교회에 종속된다. (2) 이 구별은 성경적 개혁신학적 근거가 없다. (3) 그것은 결국 가시적 혹은 제도적 교회의 약화를 초래한다. 이 논문은 바빙크의 교회론에서 가시적 교회의 양 측면으로서 제도적 교회와 유기체적 교회 사이의 관계는 어떤 우월하거나 종속적인 관계가 아니라 서로 대등한 관계이며 긴밀히 연관되어 지속적으로 상호작용하는 관계라는 것을 논증할 것이다. 또한, 이 연구는 바빙크가 이 구별에 대한 성경적, 개혁신학적 근거를 적절히 제시하고 있음을 논증할 것이다. 나아가서 이 논문은 그가 (직분과 은혜의 방편과 교회의 통치 형태를 가리키는) 제도적 교회와 (성도들의 고백과 삶을 가리키는) 유기체적 교회 사이의 구별을 통해 제도적 교회를 약화시키기보다는 강화하고 있다고볼 수 있다는 점을 제도적 교회에 대한 그의 이해에 초점을 맞추어 논증할 것이다. 이는 이 구별이 제도적 교회의 약화를 초래하는가와 관련해서 그와 비판자들 사이의 견해 차이의 핵심이 결국 제도적 교회를 어떻게 이해하느냐의 차이에 놓여 있다고 말할 수 있기 때문이다. 이런 맥락에서 이 연구는 앞에서 언급된 비판이 바빙크에게 해당한다고 말하기 어렵다는 점을 보여줄 것이고 동시에 신칼빈주의의 제도적/유기체적 교회 구별에 관한 좀 더 구체적이고 세밀한 평가가 필요하다는 점도 보여줄 것이다.

The distinction between the church as institution and the church as organism is an important feature of Neo-Calvinist ecclesiology. However, this distinction of Neo-Calvinism is not only recognized for its contribution, but also criticized. In this situation, this paper responds to the criticism of this distinction, taking Bavinck’s understanding of the institutional/organic church distinction as an important case study. The critique of this distinction can be summed up as follows: (1) The institutional church is subordinated to the organic church. (2) This distinction has no biblical or Reformed theological basis. (3) It eventually leads to the weakening of the visible or institutional church. This paper will demonstrate that in Bavinck’s ecclesiology, the relationship between the institutional and the organic church as both aspects of the visible church is not any superior or subordinate relationship, but a mutually equal relationship, and a relationship that is closely related and constantly interacting. In addition, this study will demonstrate that Bavinck adequately provides the biblical and Reformed theological basis for this distinction. Furthermore, this paper will demonstrate, focusing on Bavinck’s understanding of the institutional church, that it can be said that he is strengthening rather than weakening the institutional church through the distinction between the institutional and the organic church. In this context, this study will show that it is difficult to say that the criticism mentioned above applies to Bavinck, and at the same time, it will also show that a more concrete and detailed evaluation of the institutional/organic church distinction of the Neo-Calvinism is needed.
