경찰활동의 Dirty Work 인식이 경찰입직 의도에 미치는 영향

The Influence of the Perception of Dirty Work in Police Activities on the Intention to Become Police Officer in South Korea

국외 연구자들에 따르면 경찰은 대표적인 Dirty Work 직종으로 분류되고 있다. 경찰활동이 Dirty Work로 평가된다면 경찰관의 직업정체성에 부정적인 영향을 미치게 되고 장래 유능한 인력 충원에도 장애로 작용할 수 있다. 이러한 문제의식과는 별개로 한국에서 Dirty Work 관점을 경찰활동이나 경찰직에 적용한 사례는 드물다. 이 연구에서는 경찰활동에 대한 Dirty Work 인식 수준을 대학생들을 대상으로 평가하고 이러한 인식의 영향을 경찰입직 의도를 중심으로 분석해 보았다. 주요 연구결과는 다음과 같다. 먼저, 대학생들은 경찰활동에 대해 사회적 오점(3.70)과 물리적 오점(3.59)이 결부된 직종으로, 그리고 오점의 넓이와 깊이 모두 다른 직업에 비해 상대적으로 높은 직종으로 평가하였다. 다음으로, 경찰활동에 대한 대학생들의 Dirty Work 인식 수준은 이들의 경찰입직 의도에 영향을 미치고 있었다. 경찰활동에 대한 물리적·사회적·도덕적 차원에서의 오점 인식은 경찰입직 의도에 부정적으로 영향을 미치며, 물리적 오점과 도덕적 오점 인식은 95% 신뢰수준에서 통계적으로 유의미한 영향도 확인할 수 있었다. 마지막으로, 대학생들은 한국에서 경찰관의 사회적 지위에 대해 보통보다 높게 평가하고 있으나 이에 대한 평가 수준이 경찰입직 의도에 유의미한 영향은 미치지 못하였다. 이러한 연구결과를 바탕으로 경찰활동과 결부된 물리적이고 도덕적인 차원에서의 오점 관리가 필요함을 제시하였다.

According to prior researches, police are classified as a representative dirty work occupation. If police activity is evaluated as dirty work, it has a negative effect on the professional identity of police officers. Furthermore, it can act as an obstacle to recruiting competent personnel in the future. Apart from this problem consciousness, it is rare in South Korea to apply the dirty work perspective to police activities or police occupation. In this study, the level of perception of dirty work on police activities was evaluated for university students, and the influence of these perceptions was analyzed centering on the intention to become police officer. The main research results are as follows. First, university students evaluated the police activity as a job that was associated with a social taint(m=3.70) and a physical taint(m=3.59), and both the breath and depth of the taint were evaluated relatively high compared to other jobs. Next, university students’ perception of dirty work on police activities had an effect on their intention to become police officers. The perception of taint on the physical, social, and moral dimensions of police activities negatively influenced the intention to become police officer, and physical and moral taints were also found to have statistically significant effects at the 95% confidence level. Lastly, university students rated the occupational prestige of police officers higher than usual in South Korea, but th level of evaluation did not have a significant effect on the intention to become police officer. Based on the results of this study, it was suggested that the need to manage taints in the physical and moral dimension associated with police activities.
