Hobbes s and Locke s Idea of Nation and Vigilantism

This paper aims to consolidate the research that I have studied the phenomenon of vigilantism for the past three years in the light of Thomas Hobbes s and John Locke s theory of natural state. First, this paper observes Hobbes s idea emphasizing the governmental absolute power and Locke s pursuing the people s sovereignty one by one. Next, this research shows how the vigilantism phenomenon is interpreted according to the difference between the ideas. Through the analysis, Lock s view of nation is much nearer to the vigilantism than Hobbes s in that the people can express their thoughts and feelings freely by participating in compensating the governmental power in the emergent case. This study is expected to invite more following research because its demand will increase with the introduction of the local community policing.
