아우슈비츠의 소리 없는 통곡에서 ‘악의 평범성’ 찾기

Looking for ‘The Banality of Evil’ in Auschwitz’s Voiceless Wailing

  • 131

This paper aims to discuss the concept of the banality of evil in light of the preceding research and look for its remains in Auschwitz Birkenau, a representative Holocaust memorial and museum. Hanna Arendt created the term, meaning that an average person can do any evil without thinking the justice of his or her act based on cliche defenses and that anyone under the totalitarian regime like Nazi follows suit. In the meanwhile, Auschwitz has memorials, as a token of symbol, and museum-facilities, a representation of prisoners’ camps. The two kinds of devices for remembrance contribute to cherishing the victims’ sad stories and educating the present and following generation. This research is expected to utilize the similar buildings of Korea so that they can satisfy their authenticity and promotion through the nation and the world.
