The European City Network

From a historical perspective, the network of European cities has been a centralpart of European identity. In this article, I first examine the formation,transformation and growth of European cities from Antiquity to Middle Ages inorder to identify the origin and development of European city network. Then Iunderline the role of the city network in the formation of modernity characterized bythe development of nation-states and industrialization. Finally, I insist upon the roleof city network in the process of European integration, and, vice-versa, theformalization and strengthening of city networks by European policy process.
